What is this about?
This larp is about a group of test subjects who have, voluntarily or as part of criminal justice, agreed to enter a very long term test program that will see them closed inside a contained environment, a box, for several years.
They also agreed to be drugged and remember very little of their past. Each person has fragments that they do hold on to. Dearly.
After that, the obscure government branch that was put to testing this particular group, gradually lost track of the experiment. People are still working there, several years after it was put into motion, and it is still funded, but the rights of the people inside and the morality of the people in charge has since eroded. Now, it is a bizarre parallel existence where the Subjects have created their own version of reality in order to cope and to make sense of what has happened. It has its own rules, now. Some of the subjects pray to the overseers, others talk to the cameras in hopes of someone listening and others desperately try to remain popular and rewarded by the system.
The players in this larp will portray these Subjects in the experiment and explore the feeling of being hopelessly trapped in what can only be described as a dark, twisted version of a reality show. Except, no one is out there watching.
What we want
We want to portray a society that has been so isolated and turned away from the world that their worldview is entirely alien to anyone from the outside.
We want to explore how constantly being rated on your conformity to arbitrary rules will push people to behave in certain ways. These correct ways will be transparent to the players, and the main ones are written down under The World, so that players do not need to fear playing the game wrong, but rather decide when their characters will do something wrong.
We want to explore the wonderful feeling of doing things together as a group, a tribe. Wake up together, pray together, feel like a united mass, greater than each individual part.
We want to play a proto-religion based around the overseers and trying to gain favor from them within the Facility.
We want to create a system of attraction where everyone desires the highly rated individuals and where a high rating is considered attractive, due to the heavy socialization made around the fluctuations within the Facility’s rating system. This is meant to be more important than the features of our bodies or our gender identities.
What will happen?
During the larp
During the larp, the Subjects live through a series of rituals and events. Some of them happen every day, others are unique. At one point during the game, two new individuals, dazed and confused and without any clear memories, will be brought in. They need to be taught the ways of the Facility and be included in the Subjects community.
There will be tests and instructions given through the loudspeakers, at times. They might call for communal actions or for some individuals to follow certain instructions. The ones that have been done before, will be practiced during the workshops.
There will be webcams set up for prayer, messages to the Overseers and confessions. They can also be used to report others to the Overseers, in order for their ratings to drop or yours to be rewarded with an increase.
The larp will end with a ritual of farewell. All those who have dropped to Rating 0 or lower (This system is explained in detail in the World section of this webpage) by a certain time on Sunday, will be taken away by the Overseers to, at least as far as the Subjects believe, die. Anyone who has reached Rating 100, a mythical level, will be elevated to divine status and become one of the Overseers.
It is a funeral, of a sorts, along with a celebration of anyone who might be joining the Overseers. When the last person to be taken away has left, there will be a short time for last scenes. Then the ending song will play, and the larp will be over.
